Thank you for this nuanced perspective! And of course for tying it back to the plight and opportunity of our time.

She is so much richer and more wonderful in all her messy human complexity. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Oh Sophie, I love this piece so so much. Thank you for writing this and (re)-sharing this.

I have been listening to Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction series The Plantagenets and the Tudors. There's a thread through them of Joan of Arc. It made me realize how little I had thought of her beyond a very narrow pop-historical depiction of her. I also thought "I want to learn more about her aned I bet Sophie would be great to talk to about her." OF COURSE you have already written an essay on her and of course it's incredible and poignant and fills my heart to the brim with the joy and honor to connect with the human that was Joan.

As we continue to live in ages of oversimplification, continuously feeding upon addictive and easily digestible narratives that radicalize and isolate us with their flatness, it's an absolute a GIFT to retain the ability revel in what is so simple in its complexity. The interconnectedness of everything we are a part of, came from, and are up against.

🙏 thank you for this essay🙏
